Part 1 - Object Description

The object I will be using in this assignment is relatively small and bares no real significance to anyone other than my mother, my aunt and myself. It is an interesting piece of jewellery that might have once been actual currency. The best way to describe it would be to say it is a recast American five-dollar coin from 1893 that was made into a 24 karat gold pendant. It belonged, as I understand it, to my great grandmother. In terms of how it was actually made, there is no longer any trace of its origin as it was remanufactured, other than the coin was certainly made in the United States.  In terms of date of creation, it is stamped, as 1893, but most probable, is that the recasting was done some short time after, around 1905. The fascinating element of this object is that no one has been able to tell, as yet, if the coin has merely been coated in gold, or was duplicated. When it was examined by a jeweller, the theory is that, given its weight and detail, it was probably duplicated because it is a solid piece of 24 karat gold, throughout, and void of any trace of nickel, such as most other coins were at that time. After doing some minor research, I have found a few coins similar to this one for sale. Price wise, the coin is valued at $250 to $300 USD, but none of the other coins found, have been converted to pendants as mine has. This added gold crown, which doubles as a link for chains, is solid gold as well. In terms of dimensions of the coin itself, it is approximately 21.6 millimetres in diameter. Weight wise, it is approximately 10 grams without the crown.
